Where to stay in LA?

About a year ago, @dpbuck did a SoCal TR, and since then I've wanted to give it a go meself. Finally going to do it, leaving March 5 for a week. I need to be in San Diego for a couple of days, but I've scheduled 3 weekend nights in LA. Whole trip will be 7 nights. Gonna do it like dpbuck did, and prob spend a session at each of the biggies: Commerce, Bike, HG, and Hustler. I'll also play in Ocean's 11 while in SD.

I'll have a car, and I'd like to catch some sun while I'm in SoCal, since the sun is mostly a rumor during the winter in Vancouver. Even if it's not hot hot hot, it'll be better than what we've got up here, so at least one beach session is called for.

So I'm not wedded to staying near anywhere particular, just looking for suggestions. My style would prob be described as hippie. Doing the airbnb thing, paying for a night at one of the card rooms sounds fun in theory but not at $200+. Flying in and out of SD so I don't care about LAX.

I'm aiming for a write-up but haven't decided if it'll be a day by day TR or one big one once I'm back.

When I did my "weekend in LA", I stayed with some friends in Rancho Santa Margarita. The only traffic I hit was on Friday evening when I drove down I-5 to Ocean's Eleven.

So you're saying I can stay with them? ;)

I haven't started looking in LA yet, but airbnb in San Diego is a joke. For the price of a room in someone's home I can get a Best Western with a heated outdoor pool. So I might end up looking at hotels in LA after all. Still open to any suggestions about location.

No, I was more saying that while my location in RSM was a fair amount south of LA, I didn't have any issues getting around to any of the cardrooms over the weekend. I'd probably recommend being south rather than north. Of course the actual SoCal residents can give more direction...

If you're looking for a central location to most of the casinos, I'd check out the Downey/South Gate area for an Airbnb. If you want, I can put you in touch with the guy I stayed with.

Tx for the offer James but I think I'm going to pick a spot nearer to Hermosa beach. I want to maximize both sightseeing time (which is mostly checking out the beaches) and time for poker. I think my sched is shaping up to be: drive to LA on Thurs, check in to hotel, play at Hustler. Friday and Saturday will be Venice beach and Santa Monica by day, Bike and Commerce at night. Drive back to San Diego on Sunday, play at Ocean's 11 on the way. No HG in there but unless there's compelling reason to go, it's just a shade too out of the way.

I'm used to a 10 min drive to 2 different rooms, so 45 min home at the end of a session, I'm not excited about that. I am toying with the idea of spending Sat night at a Motel 6 type place near Commerce in case I want to/get to have an epic session, I can play til 3 then crash. Flip side is if the pokers don't cooperate, then I'm stuck in a dump far away from a beach, and that sounds yucky. So I think I'm gonna deal with the commute.

I think I've decided that airbnb is...I just don't get it. For the same price as a room in some dude's home I can get me own room in a hotel, seems a no-brainer to me. Esp if I keep poker player sleep schedule, I don't want kids and the family dog waking me at 730 am.

i'm not sure what games you play - but hollywood park may be worth checking out if you're staying in west la. pretty quick drive from the beach.

getting to bike/commerce on a friday night will be a bit of a hassle - just plan for a bit of a hike as traffic in LA is absolutely the worst on fridays.
