2/5 session shotgun format

f0xr Posts: 63SubscriberProfessional
I've been told that I should record ever hand I play for study to help improve my game, so I tried it at a recent 2/5 session. I'm posting a short hand history for every hand I vpip over a 10 hour session, 45 hands total. I used a little common poker shorthand, hopefully everything will be easily understandable.

I'm looking for any comments and criticism anyone may have, not every hand in really interesting obviously, but there were at least a few spots I thought were tough, and I'm sure I made plenty of mistakes that you will be able to see. So thanks in advance for your comments.

This was a Monday session at 2/5 nl, 200-1000 buyin. I noted stack sizes where it seemed relevant, otherwise assume 1000 or so effective stacks. I didn't include pot size on each street, just for the sake of keeping things simple, but i tried to include enough information to calculate the relevant amounts. Game is 9 handed unless noted otherwise. This session was over approximately 300 hands dealt.

I will review hand number 1 and 33 as you requested.
Our preflop and flop plays are fine. Turn bet needs to be bigger. We don't block top pair, and the villain's flop calling range will often continue on the turn. If we are bluffing OTT, we want to use a big sizing, so when we have value like JJ, we also need to use a big sizing. I'd go about 75-100% PSB. The river fold is not good. I know that the flush came in, but we can't just give the villain credit for only flushes and fold. Yes he can have some AQ here as well. But we have one of the strongest hands that arrives on the river like this. If we are folding JJ, what are we calling with? Look at the price we are getting. getting 3:1. We only need to be good here 25% of the time to call. Even if he has a flush most of the time, it is possible for him to bluff or make some weird block bets. I've seen it enough in live poker where I would never fold JJ here. You can't just put your villain on "one" hand. You have to assign a reasonable range.

hand 33 - I like the call. The V isn't repping much with his play. He's only really repping 5x or TT and we block TT. He can't have QQ and he wouldn't take this line with Qx.

You don't think he could have J9 because of the line he took? check behind with open ended on the flop and raise the turn with it.

    1. 6 handed, co 20, I 60 JJ btn, call
    KsJs8c I 65, call
    2x I 175, call
    Ts co 300, I fold

I like slightly bigger flop bet on this texture 75-80. I’d also go slightly larger on turn. AP call off river

    2. 5 handed, I 20 utg AKo, btn call, sb call
    AQJr I 35, call, call
    T bdfd, xxx
    7x I 110, fold, fold

Bigger sizing on flop, I’d follow up on turn with like 1/2 pot a fair amount as well as 2pr and back door draws are likely to give us some value now. X’ing some of the time is fine, but generally multiway I’ll bet here more often than not

    3. I 15 btn KQs, fold, fold

    Cool

    4. Utg 20, call, call, I 100 KK co, fold, fold, fold

    Good

    5. Mp 30, I call 77, sb call
    A95hh x, mp 60, fold, fold

    Cool

    6. Hj 20, sb (100 eff) call, I 80 bb AA, fold, sb call
    K86r I 50, fold

Squeeze larger with your range here. Make that sb pay for flatting pre here. I like 100ish

    7. Limp, limp, I 30 hj AcQx, co 85, rec limper calls, I call
    Tc9c4x xxx
    Qx xxx
Kx Limper bets 5, I call, co folds, I win against 22

Bet turn after flop checks through.

    8. Limp, I 25 co 66, btn call, sb call, limper rec all in 150, I call, sb call
Axxxx board x down, limper wins AJo

I’d probably fold given it’s the bottom of our iso range, and I tend to see limp/rr as very strong range of hands at a high frequency like 1010+ AQo+ with the dead money you could make a case to 3b here to iso that range with all the dead money and we’d probably get close to the right price to get it in against that range. (Too many hands for me to do the math for each one) High variance play obviously, Calling is bad imo, So id lean towards 3b or fold, likely Folding this specific hand here and possibly calling off if we were to close the action with the right price.

    9. Mp 20, call, call, I call btn QJcc, sb call
Qx6s3s Mp 80, co rec call, I call
    4x mp x, co 150, I call, mp 300, co all in 305, I fold
    2x mp wins Kqo

Squeeze pre to 100-110xx. Ap call off

    10. Staddle, I 35 hj 33, bb call, straddle call
    JT6r xxx
    9x x, staddle 60, fold, fold

    That’s fine

    11. I 20 utg JdJx, utg1 call, co call, btn call, sb 85, I call, utg1 call, fold, fold
    Td9d3c sb 125, I call, fold
    Kc sb 125, I fold

I wrote a more detailed response to this in slack already. I like a small 4b to 190ish to this small sizing. I think that will maximize our EV, but flatting is fine too.

    12. Utg1 limp, I 25 btn 53s, fold, fold, fold

Ok. Edit: don’t iso raise this over a limp.

    13. I 20 utg1 QJss, sb 70, I call
    7c5s2s sb 75, I call
    6s x, I 190, sb all in 500, I call
    6x my hand is good

    NH

    14. co 15, I 45 btn A7ss, fold

    NH

    15. I post hj, mp1 limps, mp2 20, I call AJo, bb calls, mp1 85, call, I fold, fold
    KQ4 mp1 wins 44

    Don’t post in the HJ

    16. utg1 15, mp call, sb call, I call bb T8hh
    Kc9c3h xxxx
    4h sb 15, I call, fold, fold
    Ac xx sb wins A7hh

Calling is fine, consider squeezing some of the time. Especially if utg standard raise isn’t 15/opens too wide

    17. co limp, I 30 sb 6s6x, co call
    KxTx8s I 40, co call
    9s I 75, co call
    Jx xx, co wins ATss

Giving up mostly, and bluffing flop some of the time is probably ok. I definitely wouldn’t fire turn, that’s just burning money. We have plenty of better bluffs.

    18. utg 15, call, call, I call sb 88, bb call
765r utg 30, fold, fold, I call, bb call
    4 bdfd xxx
    Tx I x, bb 60, utg call, I 205, fold, fold

I would be very aggressive on this flop against an utg donk that is cbetting this board, I prefer raising flop and putting B.B./UTG in a really tough spot with a lot of hands.

    19. Hj limp, I 25 co 97s, fold

    Ok

    20. utg limp, I 25 co K9dd, call
    Ad6d5x I 35, fold

Thats fine, I’d be x’ing the nut draw some of the time. And barreling worse flush draws at a higher frequency. Against an utg limp donk fish we probably should just bet more often.

I didn’t really give a detailed response because there were so many hands but I wrote some thoughts/what I would have done in some of those spots for the first 20.

Np, also didn’t mention hand #9 AP, can’t fold

    1. 6 handed, co 20, I 60 JJ btn, call
    KsJs8c I 65, call
    2x I 175, call
    Ts co 300, I fold
seems like a disciplined fold. would need reads to make this call since viallins are so nutted here usually. Math wise we block so many 2 pair combos, not sure how many one pair hands take this line. we also lose to straights. kind of tough hand only cause we beat so much obv but aain unless he has like KT idk what leads into us.

    2. 5 handed, I 20 utg AKo, btn call, sb call
    AQJr I 35, call, call
    T bdfd, xxx

im betting turn small here to et value from Ax. also two pairs that want to try to fill up

    7. Limp, limp, I 30 hj AcQx, co 85, rec limper calls, I call
    Tc9c4x xxx

Kx Limper bets 5, I call, co folds, I win against 22
lol. live poker. i would lead turn here with all my Qx that end up here. get value from his Jx, AK, FDs he checks back a ton of hands he tryign to see river imo

    9. Mp 20, call, call, I call btn QJcc, sb call
Qx6s3s Mp 80, co rec call, I call
    4x mp x, co 150, I call, mp 300, co all in 305, I fold
    2x mp wins KQo
discussed on slack but think calling flop is fine but could fold and turn is a fold to the 150 more often than not and a 100% fold to the c/r

    11. I 20 utg JdJx, utg1 call, co call, btn call, sb 85, I call, utg1 call, fold, fold

these the hands that get us in trouble haha. good thing flush didnt hit.

    KxTx8s I 40, co call
    9s I 75, co call

this is a bit of bad spot for me too. I wonder if we should be betting here on river but instead of going bet 2/3, bet 1/2 turn, we need to bet turn larger and then get to triple if need be., if we cant triple than probably wiser to check turn here and try to bet river. we shouldnt be sizing down on turn and expecting FE on river. Feel like this is reason why sizing flop smaller is better cause we can size up on turn and not have to worry about creating bad sprs for us with a bluff. i could be offbase here too. i dont like turn bet and next i dont like flop sizing.

    18. utg 15, call, call, I call sb 88, bb call
765r utg 30, fold, fold, I call, bb call
    4 bdfd xxx
    Tx I x, bb 60, utg call, I 205, fold, fold
ot lucky turn, surprised we ddint chop. lead turn, every set and 2 pair checking back now, we can balance with FDs.

ill try ot get next twent y next time haha. i could be wrong all this too. later foxr

Yeah it was weird all around, that's why I checked turn because it's so strange for him to check this flop, I thought he would stab turn with his if I checked
