Big O - raise before flop?

6/12 limit big O
1 open limp by a drunk guy, I look down at As2sKs7d8d on the button. Should I be 2betting this or just content to see the flop ?

Thoughts: I block my low draw with the 7 and 8 which will rarely be used in my final hand, but then again I feel I am definitely ahead of the limper's range and would prefer to isolate him rather than going 4 handed to the flop.

If this game is anything like most o8 games I don't think you will get folds .. that said you have a two way hand and I like to raise these especially since there is only one player and you are on the button. If you had all low cards then I would have probably overlimped since you want other players in the pot to build it up.

Now I havent played big o in two years but from what I remember you really need a very nutty draw.. So like nut flushes etc.. I sometimes float in o8 with backdoor draws that might not always be the absolute nuts because the pots usually have odds to do this. I am not sure if this is profitable in big o.

I think your hand should be pretty easy to play post flop even with the 78.. the A2K is just too good not to raise in position.

  • I agree with Wendy. Raise this up all day. It would be one thing if a few people had limped in front but your description sounds like this guy is limping with a very wide range. A2Ksuited with another suit is good enough. Where is this played?

if there were a bunch of limpers are you generally not raising, even for value? Is this just in big o or in o8 as well? in pot limt o8 i would also raise in pos. How would you play this in pot limit big o?

    thanks. omaha zen master. Laugh

Game is at players casino in Ventura. There was also a plo half half game running last night that is a regular game. I only had 2k with me so I didn't sit. Stacks were 2k to 18k. Blinds were 5/5. Joe tehan sitting deep, etc. I thot about short stacking but was really looking to just chill last night.

If there are a bunch of limpers ahead of me , I'm probably going to limp along in plo8. I would assume that a lot of my low cards are gone.

I mean the whole principal behind O8 is this (please correct me if I'm wrong!): make a low and free roll a high hand.

Without a flush draw AK72 does not have a ton of high hand potential, so I'm content to try to flop something before inflating the pot in a pot limit game.

In omaha 8 whether pot limit or limit you want to SCOOP... high only hands are fine too because you drag all the players with wheel cards along for the ride.. I will limp along with a high only hand and a low only hand because I need more dead money in the pot when I flop well.

When I have a two way hand I like to thin the field so that my AK high could be good since so many players call with wheel cards.. There I can actually 3/4 someone with AK high and the same low..

I was wondering what Bart meant that maybe in a multiway pot he doesnt try to thin the field because it just isnt going to work and therefore he plays in pos and if he flops well then pound them.

Pretty rare (I've never seen it in probably about 40 hours of live big o) for AK high to win the high. Remember that each player starts with 5 cards.

I will many times raise with strong high only hands (especially when there are a few people in the pot abead of me) not to thin the field, but to get more money in the pot for those times when the flop comes high and the low draw is dead or drawing for runner runner.
