History: villain is an older man who is retired and plays tons of poker. He just got back from six months in Florida where he played mostly PLO & $5/10 NLH. He also finished sixth in last year's World Series of poker seniors event. He's a local regular at our casino when he's not in Florida. Him and I are the two biggest stacks at the table. A few minutes before this hand he looked at me and said I plan on taking all those chips before I leave. I responded that's funny, because I plan on taking all of yours.

$2/5 game- Hollywood Casino Bangor, ME
Villain stack is $2200 eff
Hero stack is $1600 eff

2 limps, Villain in HJ raises to $20, Btn calls. I call in SB w 5♥️6❤️. Bb calls.

5 to flop.
A♥️3❤️9♣️($100)

Hero checks. MP checks. Villain bets $45. I call. MP calls.

Turn is 7❤️($235)

Hero leads $150. MP folds. Villain tank calls.

River J❤️($535)

Hero?

This is a hand I fold preflop as it is hard to flop well and I would be playing it OOP. As played, your check call on the flop is fine, the turn lead is fine too, but I probably lead for more, like $180+. On the river, I lead again for about $350 - $375 and fold to a raise as I am beat lot of the time.

I agree that you can fold this PF. The river is really hard to say without reads.

Leading river seems really bad as it is a terrible bluff and a terrible value bet.

You are pretty handcuffed here and probably have to check-fold.

How likely is he to have called the turn with good one pair hands with no redraw? If he folds all or most of his potential river bluffing hands on the turn, then this is a slam dunk check-fold. If he doesn't, it gets more dicey.

I totally agree that this is often a fold pre-flop. I'm certain I got caught up in the conversation earlier with this player and decided I was going to play to crack his big hand. I like the line I took on this hand very much especially since I was able to get a call on the turn from a worse hand. I agree that the sizing could have been larger.

Unfortunately I got caught up in the meta-game and led the river for $300. He instantly raised to $900 and I folded. He showed A♠️K♥️.

If I take out the meta-game stuff I 1) probably would have folded pre-flop & 2) check folded on the river. Sigh

What was the metagame? Just the conversation you guys had had?

It sounds like you already realize this, but you got too emotionally invested in the hand too easily.

We had been playing a few hours and there was a lot of play on my end that I was doing to influence later plays. I haven't played much with this guy and wanted him to essentially pit me as a novice type player. I paid off in a spot where I knew I was behind early on in the session. I had to show my hand and was essentially showing a weak call in a smallish pot to maybe pit myself in such a manner. The bottom line is he may play a lot of poker, but clearly just plays his hands accordingly and doesn't really think about hands the way I thought he did.

You described his life story but not a lot about how he plays poker. Is he tag, lag, loose passive? Pre can be 3 bet, call, or fold depending on the player. Flop can also be c/c or c/r depending on his tendencies.

as everyone else says.. fold pre.. flop fine.. turn bet a little bigger.. the fact he tank calls means he might not have a high flush card.. river check fold.. unless he makes a really small sized bet getting like 6 :1 +

lol at this guy that he would say that he wanted all your chips when you were behaving like a fish. these old geezers are just so bad..

C/F river. Probly just folding this pre, although his sizing is weak maybe squeeze is ok.

He is definitely TAG with a tendency to be more loose at $2/5 because he is playing higher limits more often when games are available.
