So as someone who primarily plays in private games, I definitely agree that it's a must to ask for rakeback. But I'm struggling with the idea that a 1BB rake/hand is unbeatable.

Here's some math...live play at 25 hands/hour...$5/$5 10-handed home game in Texas...10% rake to $10. So a 2BB rake/hand. This won't be the case, but to make the math easy, assume max rake every hand. So, $250 comes off the table every hour to the house. Each player's share of that, on average, is $25/hour. The player pool in these games are typically weaker. So, if you can do $50/hour in these games (which obviously requires you to know what you're doing), you're still able to make $25/hr even at 2BB rake/hand.

I can name 10 people, at least, playing daily here in Texas in these games making a living at these rake levels. It isn't a bottles and models lifestyle. But they're doing it. The smartest ones are also certainly trying to do other things... rakeback... lessons... hosting/gamerunning, etc...but some aren't and are still making it.

So, in short, I agree with the point you're making about watching rake/rakeback...but I think 1BB rake/hand is too low as a go/no-go threshold.

P.S. The rake in Louisiana casinos for $2/$5 is 10% to $5 with another $2/hand for the jackpot...so effectively $7 max/hand. People are also making a living in New Orleans, Lake Charles, etc playing daily at these levels.

I said over 1bb a hand so 2 bigs would be the minimum. (as in your example).

im sure theres a 5-10 game that rakes $20 a hand where one could make a living i just havent seen it so i wouldnt advise to play in it as "standard" advice.

I've been playing in low-stakes private game in NYC. It's usually a 1/2 NL game raked 10%/$7, but sometimes turns into a 1/2 PLO game with a $5 bring in, raked 10%/$10 (PLO plays slower and the host wants to maintain his hourly). The game starts around 9 PM, and at that point most people buy in for $100-200, but by 1 AM the average stack is $500. On the best nights, when a local small business owner plays, the average stack is over $1000. You can straddle UTG or OTB up to $10 before 3 AM. After 3, the straddle is uncapped, and most pots are straddled (a couple guys straddle $10-20 every chance they can).

The game is so soft that the rake is beatable. The best players ABC postflop nits who just aren't bluffing, and the worst players are serious degens. Here's a great hand to illustrate:

7 handed 1/2 NL, BTN and UTG are nitty so they didn't straddle.
UTG folds, the aforementioned local small business owner, who just rebought for $500, opens UTG+1 for $15, as he's been doing with 90% of hands, HJ folds, I 3bet to $45 with KQo in CO, folds back to UTG+1 who calls.
Flop comes K33r. He checks, I check back.
Turn is an offsuit 5. He bets $45, I call.
    River is a 9. He bets $70, I shove for $340 more, he tank-calls with 97o.

The problem I have right now isn't that the 2/5 or 5/10 games in NYC are raked $20/hand--it's that they're capped at $50 or uncapped or the dealers take out more than they're supposed to.

At times this had a "battle royal" feel with the 4 way calls and whatnot but great show.... Winner: Dark Hammah AINEC.

Over under on how many episodes until The dark Hammah and Robo are on together. I set the line at 2.5.
