I live in a shitty poker market were 2/5nl games run only a few days a week now. I am 30 years old. I have been playing for a living for 2 years now with a family and house. I really can't pick up and move to a good poker market due to a ton of other issues that are irrelevant to explain. I want to go to possibly a better poker market for 10-18 days a month and commute back home. Let me you if anyone is interested and might be able to help. Let me know details?

    1. Where do you live?
    2. Is your family on board with this plan? You don't need to tell me the answer, just want to make sure you're thinking about this and the added stress that it might cause you as well as your wife.

also, added stress might hurt your play. frame of mind is a big part of playing well and being a winning player.

i live in upstate ny. Not having a game on the Reg is enough stress, but would commute to Baltimore Philly or AC since the game's are good and plentiful.

Man no offense, but this sounds like a pretty awful idea.

I guess if everyone is on board in your family you could try it out. Might as well come down to Maryland Live since it is only 2 hours farther than AC and Philly.

I think the biggest problem with this idea is your expenses will increase a lot traveling 5+ hours to play cash. You have gas, tolls, extra rent, more food costs, potential for extra car costs, and the winter is coming so you will be traveling in crap weather. Also, as others have stated do you really want to be on the road 20 days away from your family?

If poker is your dream and you can't move your family I guess it is an option. I would think finding a job and playing poker on the side would be a more profitable and better option for the family, but who am I to say.

Main thing I would do is just add up all those extra costs I mentioned plus the time you will lose traveling and really figure out if it would even help your hourly. I think you will be surprised at the difference. Also, you better have a reliable car.

    I agree with Topset.

In addtion to what he said - It can be just horrible to book a flight and have the return locked then find out the games suck or you are running bad. There is something about being able to walk away at any time that really helps with the psychology of being a cash game player so locking in travel time really messes with this.

How are the games in Niagra Falls? Or is that too far?

Niagara Falls Canada - Falls View has good action
Niagara Falls USA is pretty shitty IMHO but they throw some decent to average tournaments, where as Canada only has 1 good tournament a year..

I would think if you can find underground poker rooms with high rake locally do that option first.. even if you have to travel 20 miles to the closest big city...then travel to casino if close enough On friday/Saturday night...that's what I do... Niagara Falls is about 1.5 hrs away and Turning Stone 2 hrs.... therefore, after I tuck the kids into bed I play the high rake underground card rooms...during the week... and about every other weekend I just pick a casino to Go2 and leave right after work on friday and let the kids know I have 2 work late .... This works good and the only1 suffering is me... (my sleep) I grind from about 9 to 3 and then have to get kids on bus and off to work in morn.... usually up at 630.... during the week... on weekends I go2 casino - I just travel home by 3-4am at latest and pull over if I am dozing off.. that way I am there when they wake up.

That works best 4 me as I can't live without seeing my kids for that long.... best of luck..

Another option... start your own Underground 'private' poker game... i have found that anything under 2/5 is nearly unbeatable, given the couple hundred dollars coming off the table each hour...

at least with how high the rake is where I live...

I too live in good old upstate NY, (I think Tuck called it "the armpit of NYS" once, rightfully so) and I too have 2 kids and a mortgage and I'm telling you this because I've done what you're suggesting. And IT SUCKS!!!

Sure the games at the Borgata were sick, and the games at MDLive are throw back games, and I thought the travel was worth it. For Poker, sure the games are sick but for your family its gonna blow. Period.

Topset has it right IMHO. As much as I hate it, I have a part time job and play poker on the side. I'd love to play full time, but in my area it's improbable. I'm sure there is a guy or 2 that does it, but I'm also sure they don't have families and other obligations.

Like Groundhog said "I can't live without seeing my kids for that long" and that for me is BY FAR the worse part of traveling to play. Expenses can be made up for with winnings and losing is part of the game, but lost experiences are something we can never get back. You're talking about being away for about half the year if you do this. I'm not trying to tell you what to do, but think about that.

Nowadays if you do go forward with this plan I think https://www.airbnb.com/ would make the most sense. You can easily just rent out a room short term and people have a lot of feedback on that site. Its like the Uber of living.

I live 10 min from Niagara Falls but I got a dwi 5 years ago which I am not allowed entry into canada. The casino a play at doesn't have a bravo app. The game only runs 3 or 4 days a week and If your lucky 1 day will be good and that's if nobody sees me go north because the buyin is 500 capped.

I've started that a few weeks ago. It's a fucken joke I had to lend my whole rake because buffalo, ny is the broke hooker of poker.

Bravo makes things easier, but you can achieve the same thing by calling the casino and finding out if the game you want is going.
Better yet, you should make friends with some of the employees there and get them to give you the heads up when games are going, particularly when good games are going.

Have you looked into home/private games? 2+2 has a whole section on games like this.

I've done everything. The well is just drying up the poker economy is horrible in Buffalo ny. I mean i could and have been doing ok but it sucks when there is no potential to move up to 5/10 nl or higher

Seneca sucks. the 1/2 $100 max games are horrible. Turning Stone is like 4 hours away form you? There are some underground games in Rochester you might want to check out, but the rake is HORRIBLE.

So dumb question. Does your wife work? Is that why you live nowhere near live games as a pro?

I am asking just to get an idea of how easy it could be for you to relocate. Florida of course has nice weather. MD has the best game selection in the country.

I am not sure how expensive it is where you live but i would imagine its pretty cheap. Still if you are unable to make any money where you are moving perm is something to consider. Traveling alot for work gets old quickly as i can attest. And thats even after my company paying for expenses.

  • GhostDogGhostDog Posts: 328Subscriber
    they get about 5-8 1/2 $200 max and 1 2/5 $500 max during the week and then 8-12 1/2 $200 max and 2-3 2/5 $500 max on the weekends

The BBJ is a bit high right now so they're getting a bit more games.
