Weekend in Vegas

edited December 2014 in Poker Goals and Challenges
After yet another frustrating session a couple weekends ago (broke even for six hours at 2/5, then lost three buyins in one orbit on two bad beats and a tilt-shove with bottom pair into the nuts), I signed up for CLP, and have been just devouring everything. I've discovered some massive leaks in my game, and am excited to put what I've learned into practice.

This weekend, I'm heading down to Vegas for a couple days for my birthday, sans wife and kids, to do nothing but play poker. My goal is to play 15-20 hours of 2/5 on Friday and Saturday, and then 15-20 hours at 5/10 on Sunday and Monday. It is not entirely about the money, but more of a "reward" for a hard-working and successful year on and off the felt.

I have three goals (in order) for this trip:
1) Have a great time - I worked my ass off this year, both professionally and personally. I've achieved more than I thought possible in my business life, and have supported my family in every way imaginable. My wife and I both agree that I've earned a few days to devote myself to my hobby.

2) Apply some of the information I have learned - I haven't played a single hand of poker since I signed up for CLP in mid-November. I've learned so much from the podcasts, videos, and forums. I'm excited to put it in action. I'll certainly misapply some concepts, but just putting these ideas into play is very thrilling.

3) Make some money - The money I'm playing with isn't life or death, and even if I lose every penny I'll be playing with, it will have no impact on my family. However, it's how we keep score, right?

I'm getting into Vegas Friday afternoon and staying through Monday night. When in Vegas I usually play at Bellagio. But since the WPT is there starting this weekend, I'll probably avoid the hoopla and play at Aria instead. If anyone is down on the South Strip this weekend, hit me up!

Good advice. I'm avoiding Venetian (boo Adelson!) But should consider the Wynn...

The Aria won't be any tougher or softer than the V or W or B

Unless there is a big whale at your table I have been going to aria for years and it always has the best 2/5 pros in vegas there. Pros that could play way higher imho..I just NEVER seen players that good at any other casino. NEVER..

for that reason I see no reason why I would ever go there if I have a choice. The regs at Venetian are not that good. I respect that ppl dont want to go there because of Adelson..but there are other casinos that are nice as well and Wynn or Bellagio would be my second and third choices..

I have limited experience at Aria - two sessions at 2/5, and one at 5/10 last year. I didn't find the play any tougher than at Bellagio, but that is a small sample size. I have never played at Venetian or Wynn, so I can't compare to those two. Any others share Thehammah's thoughts?

I would say DP.. if you go early .. say from like 10 am to about 5 pm you are WAY WAY more likely to miss the better pros... They will take the later shift .. its just natural that the better pros as appose to the nitty regs will wake up late.. goto gym.. then get to casino..

I like Wynn and Venetian because you can buy in deeper.. Bellagio is generally pro light because of this as well. but that said it will limit your post flop play because of the shallower stacks

at any time on any table at any casino can be a great game.. I will say that if you find a great game the pros will come to your table. And as Claire has shown if you have a winning player at your game its impossible for two players to make better than $50 an hr at the same game in the long run.

So that means that the game has to have a unreal amount of money already on the table or someone who is feeding the game to the tunes of thousands of dollars..

So if the game has a big fish.. and the great pro comes over.. then all of a sudden your $100 potential hrly has been cut down by almost too much.. now its a race to get the money first and the good pro is going to limit your ability ..

At another casino where the "pros" are just not that great.. Even if they come to the game they wont infringe on your hrly that much because they are just not exploiting the other players as much as you are.. Thats my point.. Your chances are BETTER at Wynn and Venetian

    Sorry one more thing...

There is a poker "friend" of mine that likes to troll the 5/5 games here in LA.. He has an unreal win rate for a long period of time. He is not that loose but he is really rather perfectly selectively aggro. He can pick off someone for their whole stack while losing close to the min.

Although I like playing with him because hes nice and I like watching what he does its just so unprofitable .. I have seen him stack other players for 2k effective stacks with say 96 for two pair on a J 6 3 9 board.. He is a perfect example of what I am saying. Can I win at his table? sure? but can I win the max of my potential? NOWAY.. not with him sucking up all the money at the table..

So I just avoid him and hope that he isnt at the best game at the casino.. At least he doesnt like to move!!!

This is going to sound odd - but plan on running bad and playing bad early in the trip and being ok with it. I say this because you are excited about the trip and thus if you dont start it the way you want you may end up tilting. I have found I dont play as well when I travel unless I am just messing around or dont have specific expectations.

Planet Hollywood usually runs a pretty reckless 2/5 game on the weekends. It's uncapped as well.

Yeah, I don't doubt it. I'm really going down there to blow off steam and have some fun, so I'm expecting any bad runs to roll off me, but it is certainly something to be aware of.

I'll post a short trip report next week, but feel free to virtually rail me on Twitter @dpbuck.

My last Vegas trip I enjoyed the Venetian very much. Thought I was in the top 20% of the player pool. Good mix of tourists and non thinking regs.

Didn't get to bellagio or aria.

One more thing, that's a lot of hours you got lined up. Keep an eye on your play unless you routinely play long sessions. No shame in taking a break and enjoying all the other things Vegas has to offer if you're not playing your A game

Biggest session I've ever had in my career terms of BB came this year from a PH 2-5 uncapped game dicking around in May pre WSOP.

sample size at aria is very, very small -- one 2/5 session for like 6 hours. the play seemed just as bad as V, even though i was down 1100 because a clueless luckbox kept hitting perfectly on me.

still, given the choice, i'd choose venetian coz it's roomier than aria and the other rooms. i like wynn just because of the splendor of it -- i love that lobby and the decor of the casino more than any other place in vegas. just me.

as for adelson, when it comes to poker i'm going to vote based on where i think i'll make money. that's not the way i'm gonna make a moral or political statement. but that's subjective, for sure.

I also like the venetian. I generally use my points to buy food and the stuff you can get from the grand luxe is really good. Best food at the poker table imho..

Also venetian has a good variety of games. 1/2, 2-5, plo o8 etc..

I get that ppl dont want to support him because of his stance on online gaming. That said I too am with Tom that I will go where I feel I can make my highest hrly period..

Eventually we will get online poker back regardless of him. He spent something like 100 million trying to get romney elected and that didnt go too well so his lack of support here will fail as well.

Good start to the trip: Upgraded to first class on my flight from Portland to Vegas, and then upgraded to a suite in my hotel.

A couple of friends egged me on to play in the WPT Preliminary Event tomorrow, so I went to the Bellagio to register for that. Sat down at a 5/10 table around 8:15. Bought in for $1500, cashed out $2600 around 11:00. Only one really interesting hand. I'll post it in the forums sometime next week.

Most importantly, I felt myself getting tired (I was up and at work by 5 AM this morning) so I called out and left. I tended to stay to long in that situation in the past, so that is a good sign.

Five Diamond Event #2 at noon tomorrow, then probably some more 5/10.

Played the Five Diamond Event 2 today. 330ish runners. I got into the money, and survived to Day 2 with a below average stack. 32 players left, and I've got 95K at 1500/3000/500. Min cash of $1020 secured, but looking for the $42K up top. Restart at 1:00 tomorrow...
